Itinerary
Day 1: Žirovnica to Mt. Stol
Your adventure begins beside the Završnica lake, just above the village of Žirovnica. The path will lead you past the Valvasor mountain hut beneath Mt. Stol before traversing its southern slopes, crossing a mountain pasture, and winding through the woods before emerging on the grassy hillside of the mountain and reaching the Prešeren lodge below the mountain top.
You will kick the day off with a climb to the top of Mt. Stol, the highest point of the Karawanks. Afterward, you will follow one of the most scenic Slovenian mountain ridges, which borders Austria and offers awe-inducing views of the southern valley and the Julian Alps beyond. Crossing grassy meadows and alpine pastures, you will arrive at the Koča na Golici mountain hut.
Once again, you will have a mountain top to conquer for a good morning. After that, you will enjoy similarly grand views as the day before while you are making your way toward the Dovška Baba mountain. Can you spot Mt. Triglav?
Upon reaching Dovška Baba, you will descend to the village of Dovje and continue through Mojstrana to the Vrata Valley, entering the Triglav National Park while following the lively Triglavska Bistrica mountain stream. You will spend the night in the Aljaž lodge beneath the massive north face of Mt. Triglav.
From Vrata Valley, you will ascend to Luknja, a narrow passage through the mountains to the Trenta Valley. Traversing the slopes beneath Mt. Triglav and its western plateau, you will eventually climb above an altitude of 2000 meters to reach the Dolič hut beneath Mt. Kanjavec.
Circumventing Mt. Kanjavec on its southern side, you will head toward the north entry point of the Triglav Lakes Valley — Prehodavci. Following that, you will gradually descend along the valley floor and past some of its most picturesque glacial lakes until you reach Double Lake and the mountain hut next to it.
On your last day, you will descend across the charming mountain pastures above Bohinj, including the Dedno Polje and Blato mountain pastures. The journey will wrap up in Stara Fužina, an authentic alpine village on the shore of Lake Bohinj.

Extra days
Day 0: Draga Valley to Zelenica hut
You can begin your hut-to-hut hike in the Draga Valley, from where you will ascend past the Preval mountain pasture to the top of Mt. Begunjščica to lay your eyes on one of the most striking views in Slovenia. By descending to the other side of the mountain, you will reach the Zelenica hut, a popular ski touring destination in winter.
You will hike to Mt. Stol from here the next day.
Day 7: Bohinj to Pokljuka Plateau
To prolong your hiking adventure in Slovenia, you can ascend the Pokljuka Plateau, marching through its wooded area and crossing the famous Zajamniki mountain pasture dotted with wooden shepherd huts and a mountain vista in the background. You will spend the night in a hotel in Goreljek.
Day 8: Goreljek to Lake Bled
The final stage will take you straight to the shores of the Slovenian crown jewel. You will strike across the Pokljuka Plateau, visit some less-known mountain pastures, and gently descend to Bled. You’ll know you’re at the end when you see the magical Lake Bled with an island in its middle!

Description
The Slovenian Mountain Trail Highlights Hike is the ideal way to immerse yourself in the charm of the Julian Alps and the Karawanks. From the breathtaking views atop Mt. Stol to the scenic Triglav Lakes Valley, this trip offers a truly unique experience.
The route runs along the least technically demanding and picturesque section of the famous Slovenian Mountain Trail, the ultimate hiking challenge in the country. Although the path is adapted to be doable for any regular hiker, it includes some rocky passages and height exposure but requires no scrambling or climbing skills.
Starting in the Karawanks on the Austrian border, the track will lead you along grassy ridges, across meadows and mountain pastures, and through alpine valleys before dropping you off in the heart of the Julian Alps next to Lake Bohinj. But not before introducing you to the towering north face of Mt. Triglav and the Peričnik Waterfall in the Triglav National Park.
Passing kilometers in the stunning mountain landscape of the Alps, you will rest your legs in cozy mountain huts along the way. These lodges offer a warm and welcoming atmosphere with a chance to meet other hikers and learn about the local culture, including trying the authentic local dishes.
We strive to make your experience as comfortable and convenient as possible. That’s why we take care of booking your spots in the mountain huts in advance and provide you with a booklet that includes a detailed itinerary and GPS navigation along the planned route. Our team will offer you support during your hike as well.
The tour is customizable, with options for extra days before the first stage and after the last one. If you share your wishes with us, we can start sorting out the itinerary to suit your needs in no time.

Things to know
We have rated our tours on a scale from 1 to 5. 1 being the easiest and 5 being the most difficult.
Fitness level difficulty tells you about how fit you need to be for a tour and how much walking there is. Most of our tours are suitable for most people that are regularly active and can walk for around 5-6 hours per day with breaks.
Technical difficulty tells us about the paths we use – Level 1 means that zero hiking experience is required, while 5 is only for experienced hikers used to the exposure and basic climbing techniques.
Our guided tours are led by UIMLA or IMFGA internationally licensed guides who have completed many years of training to make your hut to hut hike both safe and enjoyable. They are passionate individuals who call the Slovenian mountains their second home and are ready to share this adventure with you.
Different huts have different options and sometimes, private rooms for 2 or 4 persons are available. It is not the rule and they require a very early booking. We will try to get you the best possible accommodation from what is available at the time of your booking.
We recommend booking as early as possible. Slovenian mountain huts are very popular and get booked up several weeks in advance, especially on weekends. If your booking is late, we will try our best to find a suitable alternative. Sometimes, last-minute spots open up. However, we cannot guarantee a free spot.
No, all of the huts provide blankets, bedding and pillows, but you can bring your own silk or cotton sleeping liner.
All of the huts offer vegetarian options and usually at least one vegan option. Still, kitchens high up are basic, so don’t expect too many choices. Huts generally serve authentic meals like stews, soups, and sausages. If you have strict dietary restrictions, consider bringing your own food as they can’t make a special meal per request.
Most high-altitude huts in Slovenia don’t have a drinking water source, but you can buy bottled water for around 4,5€ per 1,5l. You can also bring a water purifier and filter rainwater or water from the lakes. There are also some freshwater sources on the way so you never have to carry too much.
In our guided tours, we take care of the reservations for you, and you pay for the huts together with food on the spot. In most huts, you can pay with a credit card, but it is advisable to bring some cash just in case if the internet is down – After all, you’re in the mountains. If you are a member of the UIAA Alpine Association, bring your card and you will get a discount.
For our self-guided tours, the accommodation with breakfast is included in the price.
Cell reception is on and off in most parts of the Julian Alps. The reception is generally better on the peaks and exposed parts and worse in secluded valleys. Some huts offer paid wifi option, but not all.
Most of the mountain huts only operate from June to September. Some huts are open sooner and longer, but those times change from season to season according to weather and snow conditions. Read about best seasons for hiking in Slovenia.
If conditions are favourable we can make a custom tour even before June or after September.
Most of the tours can be done even in light rain, as long as you dress accordingly. It is not unusual in the summer that there are afternoon thunderstorms, so early starts are advisable. If the weather looks really bad, we will try to reschedule or propose an alternative tour.
Try to pack light, only take what you really need. You need your passport or ID for check-in, and some cash is advisable if the internet is down. Bring your sleeping liner and earplugs for the night, and toothbrush and body wipes for hygiene. You don’t need slippers, they are in the hut already.

Exceptional “Panorama 3 day Hike to Pokjuka Plateau” October 6-8. Stayed first night at Hotel Jelka (which I highly recommend) because Blejska hut was fully booked. The hotel is a nice option as it has been fully renovated and is close to the hut but offers hot showers and a private room! Second night was at Uskovnica hut which could use updating but offers lots of outdoor patio space, hot & cold running water and indoor flush toilets, much appreciated. It is accessible to day hikers so busy mid afternoon on a sunny Sunday! My guide Klemen, was incredibly knowledgeable, attentive, helpful and kind! Every detail of our route was carefully planned to make the experience perfect for me. Assistance was generously offered and accepted through rough scree coming down from the shoulder. Pace and snack breaks were set to meet my needs exactly and Klemen is a super friendly person. I was alerted about dangerous karst crevices and places where there were steep steps and tricky spots to navigate. All of which made my experience stress-free and fun, as well as extremely safe.
I can’t find enough words to express how much I recommend Triglav Tours and particularly my guide Klemen Gerbec.
Triglav National Park is spectacular- don’t miss it!

My friends and I did a 3 day hut-to-hut hike in Triglav National Park this summer and loved it! Our guide, Bine, was very knowledgeable and provided necessary equipment and fun facts through the hike. We really enjoyed the via ferrata experience and we were happy to have someone guide us through the more technical aspects. The overnights in the huts were a blast with our guide and the other girls on our tour as well. Great way to see Triglav National park and meet new people! I cannot recommend Triglav tours enough!!

I arranged a six-day/five-night trip with Hut to Hut Slovenia. It's the first time I've gone with a tour organizer and I can say it went really well. In the past I've arranged huts myself and it is a huge hassle figuring out how to make the bookings, if the bookings actually exist, and what good/viable routes might be. Having this all sort was, at least to me, totally worth it.
The routing is via Ride with GPS, which was great. I'd recommend bringing 1:25,000 scale paper maps as a backup, just in case.
The huts themselves differ wildly. Some are really rustic with, ahem, interesting toilet facilities. One was accessible by road and thus had showers, a long menu, and even espresso. All will have some sort of food, but you might only have two options for dinner (one with meat, one vegetarian). The cuisine in the Slovenian huts leans strongly to stews and goulashes with minimal fresh vegetables and/or fruit. Certainly good and hearty but pretty much everyone I talked to said the food was better in the Italian and Austrian huts. Some huts are cash only, some take cards (but the card reader might be down). A 1.5 litre bottle of water is about 6 euro, so if you have a beer with dinner and also buy lunch you need to carry about 25-30 euro per day in cash (assuming you have a booking that includes breakfast).
Of the six days of hiking, four were ridiculously spectacular, with the highlight being sunrise from Mt Stol. Getting up to the high mountains, though, can be crazy steep, with switchbacks only sparsely used. Descents are similarly tough, and you have to watch every step. For the first time ever I used trekking poles and my knees thank me. Two days were a bit of a slog, but this is probably unavoidable getting up to or down from the high terrain.
Would I do something like this again? Yes, absolutely! But next time it will probably be the Dolomites.

We had a lovely hike today with our guide Klemen. He personalized the tour on our needs and interests, so that we saw places we wouldn't without his experience. The hike was a little bit slippery after the rain from the last days and it went a lot upwards, but it was totally worth it! Thanks again :)

Tina and her team gave me perfect support on my hut hike through the Triglav National Park in July. In particular, they had to cater to my specific needs twice, which they did for me with no problem. I once had to cancel at short notice before the start of the trip because my father was not feeling well, but then we found a solution and I was able to start the hike. Tina and team first canceled the huts immediately and then reserved them again for me. Even when my condition caused a little tour change again, I immediately had suggestions and these were immediately available in the Trip plans app. I liked this app very much because it was easy to handle and the huttohut-team gave a short overview how the daily tour will be and which highlights – mostly beautiful views – I will see“

Vielen lieben Dank!

A fantastic hike in a fantastic company. We were a group of two couples on a hike and got along really well. Our guide Luka was fantastic, he took care of every little detail before and during the tour. He picked us up each at our hotels respectively and we made a short pit stop at a local bakery to get a second breakfast before starting the hike. The tour is extremely scenic, not too hard but far from easy three day hike where you see a great portion of the Alpe Guilia. The first day is quite long and you have a lot of uphill hiking of course but the second seemed like the hardest because of rockier terrain. The views are fantastic on the second day! The last day is a bit easier but we were already quite tired and were already looking forward to the end. I think I can recommend this tour to almost any hiker and even if you are not too experienced or fit the guide will always match your pace and make sure you are comfortable.

This was a truly amazing experience! We really enjoyed our beautiful Seven Lakes Valley hike with an overnight stay at a mountain hut. The alpine scenery of mountains throughout the hike was simply stunning especially the crystal clear emerald lakes, which are absolutely breathtaking! The cosy mountain hut was a lifesaver after a long day’s hike, dinner was hearty and delicious, atmosphere was lively and the beds were warm and comfortable - overall a great experience! What made it all the more enjoyable was being in the safe hands of our brilliant guide, Klemen who was not only very experienced, professional and knowledgeable, but he was also extremely helpful and accommodating. He went out of his way to take care of our needs during the journey. From the start, he was very responsive and proactive in helping us arrange our itinerary in the best way possible to maximise our time there. We also did a private rock climbing session with him after the hike and it was awesome! We definitely enjoyed our time in Slovenia with him and highly recommend going with this company and a private guide like him if you are looking for a customised trip.

If I could give 100 stars, I would. I don't know if you're a big company or just two or three people behind this, but thank you for such an amazing experience. It was a beautiful adventure. The trails were perfect, each day different from the rest, and a natural beauty that I have seldom seen elsewhere. I had no experience in the world of hiking, and now I can't wait to do the next one! (hopefully next time organised by myself 😂). I had one of the best weeks of my whole life. Thank you a million guys.

My wife, son and I completed a 5-day privately guided hike in late August through the beautiful Julian Alps.
Our guide Jan was amazing.....with rain of 3 out of 5 days, we were still able to hike every day (including an epic 11-mile hike on the last day) and think we ended up with an even better trip than originally planned! He was constantly checking the weather and pivoting us to different areas.
Not originally planned was a hike in the wine region in which we visited a family owned (and family run) vineyard and sat with the owner drinking wine and talking about family and life. It was really great......and Jan made this happen.
Slovenia and the Julian Alps are absolutely stunning, the people are wonderful, the mountain huts are an incredible experience and I couldn't rate this trip any higher. Thank you, Jan and thank you, Triglav Tours.

I am so happy I did this 5 day tour across the Julian Alps. It is very diverse and you get to see so much beautiful nature, from high alps on the first part to amazing Soca River and Trenta valley where we stayed for two nights. This part of the country is simply breathtaking. Those two parts of Slovenia are really popular so we met quite a lot of people but on the last part we crossed the Komna valley and it was much quieter and completely different from the rest of the mountains. We had a great guide in our group and he told us all the fun stories and was cheering for us during the hard parts. The organization of the tour was perfect and I think I will come again to Slovenia for more hut to hut hiking.
